What are your main criteria to create unique and aesthetic maternity photography?

Get to know your clients better. Talk to them, find their comfort zones, and what they dislike. Always be open to their suggestions, and share your own with them. A photoshoot usually goes south when you don’t know your clients well.

How do you turn the mother’s ideas into memorable maternity photography?

Moms are always special, they deserve all the respect in the world. I always welcome their suggestions. Among parents, the mother shares the strongest connection with the child. Therefore, when they share some idea, try to implement it. You will be amazed sometimes. Biggest example was my first maternity photoshoot!

Why did you decide to focus on maternity photography?

I started with providing Newborn Photoshoots at Clickbaby Photography back in 2012. And most people who were looking for newborn photography wanted maternity sessions too. At that time there were only a handful of photographers in India who provided this service. Hence I fell into this without trying for it.

What is a success story in taking maternity photographer photoshoots that you are proud of?

That 90% of our maternity clients come back for another session. A returning client gives a huge boost to my confidence that we must be doing something right. Also a returning client is quite easy to work with since they trust you a lot more.

What are some pro tips to become a maternity photographer?

First very important thing for me, a male photographer doing maternity photo sessions – Empathy for our clients. One must always remember that pregnant moms are not professional models. They definitely want to feel beautiful and look good in their maternity portraits, but with a rapidly changing body and all those hormones, pregnant women can sometimes be more self-conscious about their figure. As a professional photographer, it’s my job to make them feel comfortable and ease away the awkwardness they might be feeling in front of the camera.

Second is to learn how to pose people. It took me years to learn what works and what doesn’t. But nowadays you can just attend a good posing masterclass and immediately see improvement in your photography. Yeah, candid photography is all great but even for that you need to give cues.

What are your main criteria to create unique and aesthetic maternity photography?

My most important question to all my clients of maternity photoshoots at Clickbaby Photography is “Can you put into words what you feel about your pregnant self and the little one who is growing inside of you?”. While doing the session, I will always try to create a few images that make a strong visual link to their idea of motherhood.

How do you turn the mother’s ideas into memorable maternity photography?

A lot of mothers come with specific requests to make an image that they have seen on Instagram or Pinterest. I can’t really say a direct no, but what I generally do is to put a twist on it or make it in such a way that it ties into that thing about making a strong visual link to the client’s idea of motherhood.

What type of camera and special equipment do you use for maternity photography?

I use a simple mirrorless camera called Canon EOS R and generally shoot a lot with 85mm and 24 mm lenses. For maternity sessions I do play around a lot with lights – natural and artificial.

Why did you decide to focus on maternity photography?

I am not a crowd guy, I am more of a silent, bit reserved person. I did a few events / weddings long back, but did not connect much with it. For me the portraits are what I personally connect with and love working on. When I started photographing children, I somehow fell in love with that simplicity, innocence and purity in them. That’s how I enter into newborn & maternity as it appears to me as a full cycle to capture baby journey … hahahh 😀

What is a success story in taking maternity photographer photoshoots that you are proud of?

It’s hard to point to one as I have multiple stories. As a male photographer, gaining their trust, making them comfortable in front of the camera, is what I consider to be my success story. In one of my shoots, even in the 35th week of pregnancy, getting to the location early morning before the sunrise which is 2hrs away from where they live, spending 8 hrs including travelling and shooting is what amazes me. When these photographs are so important to them, then I have no other option than giving my best.

What are some pro tips to become a maternity photographer?

Focus on emotion and showing connections, then take care of location, lighting and wardrobe, which elevates your picture to the next level. It is about how you use the location, light and equipment and produce consistent results that matters.

What are your main criteria to create unique and aesthetic maternity photography?

Ask yourself what you want to show, what you want to say through your photos. See if you could find your style otherwise your photos are just like many other photos.

Though I guide them into poses, I also give them the space to be themselves. That is where surprises are hidden. If you can make your subject comfortable in front of the camera, half of your job is done.

Why did you decide to focus on maternity photography?

I am blessed that I could pursue my passion of photography. I am an Engineer and an MBA by education, worked in corporate for many years but then decided to pursue my passion full time. While starting off, I tried my hands at all photography genres like weddings, products, food etc. The genre of Maternity & Newborn Photography truly spoke to me. When I am capturing a pregnant woman I am not just clicking a picture of her, I am clicking that pure emotion of carrying a life within her. The strongest bond in the world – one between the mother and her child – develops even before the baby is born and this is something I absolutely love to capture in Memories by Barkha.

What is a success story in taking maternity photographer photoshoots that you are proud of?

After 5 years of hard work, I could establish a strong brand that has won some of the most respected photography awards globally. I was honored to receive the ‘Canon Maestro’ title this year. Then international awards like WPE, Rise international, AFNS etc provide validation that my work has reached global standards. If you look at my work on my website , you will find how my work has grown over the years. My success story is that of a hard working photographer, who ensures that every single photoshoot is unique and puts her best creative self for every client. I want to put India on the global stage of Maternity and NewBorn Photography. In every photo session, I try to push boundaries of creativity and style to create timeless portraits.

What are some pro tips to become a maternity photographer?

I personally find the maternity genre as challenging but one that can be mastered with hard work and a lot of creativity. While working with pregnant women you have to be very quick – you cannot just ask them to stand there and then keep on working on lighting or posing. So before every session, plan meticulously . Always have a workflow in mind, which helps you create beautiful portraits without making the experience tiring for the expecting mom. Learn from the masters. Look at the work of different masters of this genre, and take in-person training from the ones you most resonate with. Most importantly enjoy every photoshoot and give your best to capture once in a lifetime memories of your clients.

What are your main criteria to create unique and aesthetic maternity photography?

For me 2 main criteria for creating amazing maternity portraits are:

1. Sticking to my style and strengths. Over the years I have developed my own style and own sense of what looks beautiful on expecting momma. While I try to always push boundaries of creativity, its always in my own style. Never try to copy styles of other photographers. Take inspiration from all around but build your own style. Clients who resonate with your style will follow you.

2. Identifying the personality of the expecting momma: Always talk to your clients on what they have in mind for their maternity photoshoot and what kind of person they truly are. What values do they resonate with the most. This will help you create something unique for every client and portray their true emotions and personality in the photoshoot. Every expecting momma is beautiful. You need to capture their beauty in their own unique way.

How do you turn the mother’s ideas into memorable maternity photography?

I always have pre-consultation calls with my clients. During these calls, I listen to my clients. I ask them about their bond with the baby, about how they are as an individual, as a women, their special pregnancy moments etc. All of this gives me a good idea of what kind of personality I want to portray in the images. Lot of my clients leave it to me to create concepts for them. In such photoshoots, I am alwaysable to push my boundaries of creativity as my clients have trusted me to make them look beautiful and unique. Whenever my clients already have concepts in mind, it makes me try different concepts but I always make it a point to communicate that I would still follow my own style and only use their suggestions for inspiration. I always tell my clients that I do not just click pictures, I create memories for a lifetime.
